Can UPI be used for international transactions?
Curious about Unified Payments Interface
No, UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is primarily designed for domestic transactions within India. It is not intended for international transactions. UPI relies on the Indian banking system and is supported by Indian banks and payment service providers. Therefore, you cannot use UPI to make payments or transfers to individuals or businesses located outside of India.
However, UPI is accepted in few other countries as well. You can now pay foreign merchants via UPI in UAE, Singapore, Nepal and Bhutan as per mid 2023.
For international transactions, you may need to explore other payment methods such as international wire transfers, PayPal, or other global payment platforms that support crossborder transactions. These services typically have specific features and functionalities tailored for international payments and comply with the necessary regulations and currency conversion requirements. It's recommended to consult your bank or a trusted financial institution for the best options available for international transactions.
